Comrades 2016 - Question time with Chantelle Gaugeler
1. So Chants rumor has it you ditched ironman SA this year because you heard there is 24 999 people you could talk to at comrades compared to 2999 at ironman, is this true ?
Ha ha ha you all know how I love a chatty run!! I mean seriously, this I can do. A little run with a chat the whole way, what could be better :) This, this is what I have been training for!! 2. So why comrades ? To be honest, before I ever started training, I always thought one day I would love to do comrades, can you imagine, “Hi my name is Chantelle and why yes, yes I have run the comrades” I mean not many people can say that. Then I went for my first run, and thought NEVER! Running is hard!! I put the idea out my head and started swimming, which then grew into a sprint triathlon, then an Olympic distance with 70.3 as my ultimate goal. After 70.3 I was like, I WILL become an IRONMAN, I mean it is THE triathlon of Triathlons!!! This year I thought I would try and do the 2 Oceans, it was taking place 2 weeks before Ironman so I thought I would do the running race then go down to PE and support my brother and friends. After the 2 Oceans, which I absolutely LOVED, I crossed the finish line and thought, yes, yes, I am going to do Comrades!!!! I mean this is THE run of all RUNS! I called Lucie and told her. Her first words were, Yes Chants, you had a great run, but wait a week, you are on a bit of a high now. Let the legs rest and decide in a weeks’ time. So I put the phone down and entered comrades right away!!! A week later I was down from my high and though, hhhmm should have listened to Lucie, I was on a little bit of a high, ha ha ha 3. How's the training been going ? The training has been going well. I mean I have had a few downs, like my calf getting sore, and needing to rest it. Which as everyone knows makes you want to panic and wanting to run extra as you so worried you loosing fitness. But in doing that I discovered my Chiro Jaiden Meys which has miraculously fixed my calf! (touch wood) Think the biggest challenge with the training is not to get injured and not to get sick. I am literally walking round wrapped in bubble wrap. I have bactroban up my nose, my bum has pin pricks from vitamin B injections, I have Berocca and Corenza all an arm’s length from me at any given time. I have enjoyed it, but I can safely say this will be my last running race. I am missing the triathlon training and triathlon people WAY too much 4. What difference has there been in your training compared to what you normally do? The training is very different to that of Ironman. Firstly it is only once a day, which has been giving me a lot of free time in the evening, to sit on the couch eat peanut butter and power through a series of Vampire Diaries. I keep feeling like I am not doing enough or should be doing more. But as Lucie says, stick to the program. Which I have been. My training has also consisted of biking and swimming to keep me training everyday but not getting injured with the constant running. Training for a running race is not as nice as training for a triathlon. Triathlon training you ALWAYS have someone to train with you and you are never alone. With running however, a lot of the runs I have had to do on my own, namely the Sunday afternoon second run. Or my runs in the morning are a lot longer than most people so I need to carry on solo. Which as you all know sucks, as I need to practice chatting whilst running for Comrades 5. Lastly as you are a marketing executive at Discovery do you think you will reach your vitality points goal and get a free smoothie for running the comrades ? Ha ha ha I better, or I am going to be chatting to the other Gore about this We wish you all the best and we will be watching for 10 hours only (no pressure). |

1. How did the marathon go ? I loved it!! Had such fun!! Scenery was amazing, the race was so well organised, water points every 1km and just had a great time out! 2. Did you ever feel that you weren’t warmed up for the marathon and you actually needed to have swum 3.8kms and ridden 180kms before you started? Ha ha ha believe it or not, was very weird not prepping for ages before with all the transition bags. Waking up in the morning and getting straight into running gear, with sunscreen and a cap was very strange. I mean no wetsuit, or checking that your bike is ok or standing on the beach thinking eeekkk. Actually didn’t feel like we were about to do a marathon, just felt like a Sunday run 3. What was your time for the marathon ? 4:43 – Qualifier for two Oceans YEAH BABY! and Comrades… 4. Did you and Kelly-Anne chat away for the full 42kms? Ha haha obbbbbbbbviously!!! We chatted the whole way in the car to Nelspruit with Ali, and Glen, then the whole 40min bus drive to the start, then the entire 42km we chatted!! 5. Which run races are next? Next I have the Tough one, then my 21mk at 70.3 and then the main goal 2 oceans Ultra 6. What’s your goal for Comrades? Shew, I don’t know about Comrade’s just yet, I mean a marathon, plus another marathon and then 5extra kms?! That’s far!! Think the main goal at the moment is to do The Ultra |

1. How did the marathon go? I really enjoyed the marathon, Chants and I weren't going for a specific time, we just wanted to do a race outside of JHB and get away for the weekend, it was a beautiful scenic race, a tad bit hot though! 2. Did you ever feel that you weren’t warmed up for the marathon and you actually needed to have swum 3.8kms and ridden 180kms before you started? Um no! I was quite happy to just have the run leg to look forward to! It was a bit strange not having to organize a bike, and transition bags for a race, usually with a Triathlon there's lots of preparation and organization the day before the race! 3. What was your time for the marathon? 4:44, we took it easy! 😜 4. Did you and Chants chat away for the full 42kms? Is this even a question? Obviously yes!! 5. Which run races are next? Our next goal is Two Oceans Ultra in March! 6. What’s your goal for Comrades? No plans for comrades next year, one day though! |
